German defender Jens Nowotny is retiring from the game due to persistent injury.

“The latest injury clinched it,” the 33-year-old said in an interview with Kicker magazine published on its web site.

Nowotny made 48 appearances for Germany, his final international being a 3-0 victory over Sweden in August. He was a member of the squad that finished third in last summer’s World Cup finals.

Nowotny was at Bayer Leverkusen for most of his career and played in 334 Bundesliga matches.

His final club was Croatian outfit Dinamo Zagreb. but he left the club earlier this month after being told he needed another operation on his left knee.
