Olympiakos have sacked coach Takis Lemonis, the club has confirmed.

Olympiakos’s board fired Lemonis “having in mind the immediate improvement of the football team for the attainment of their goals for the current period,” the club said on their Web site.

Spanish assistant Jose Segura, who joined the club last summer from AEK Athens, has been put in charge of the team for the rest of the season.

Lemonis’s dismissal follows the team’s elimination from the Champions League last week after a 3-0 defeat by Chelsea in the first knockout round.

Olympiakos are a point behind leaders Panathinaikos and could yet win a domestic double as they lead Iraklis 2-0 in the first leg of their Greek Cup quarter-final.
