Barcelona skipper Carles Puyol admits the players have only themselves to blame for their failure to retain the Liga title.

Although Barcelona finished level on points with Real Madrid, they lost the title because of their inferior head-to-head record.

The Spanish international defender feels a lack of consistency played a major role in Barcelona only finishing second.

“We are culpable for losing the league,” Puyol told the Spanish press.

“Perhaps during a part of the season we have not played at the necessary level on the pitch and now we need to learn from the mistakes.

“To win the league it is necessary to be consistent and that was not possible. Within the team we admit this.

“Each match is a final and in the Spanish league it is impossible to relax.

“This end to the league season is an enormous lesson to us. Perhaps our excessive confidence was our downfall.

“Personally I believe in this team and these players to be able to win more titles, but now it all depends on the directors.”
