Stiliyan Petrov has signed a new four-year deal with Aston Villa.

Petrov has won the club’s player of the year award at their annual dinner and he has been rewarded for his performances this season with a new deal.

Upon his £6.5million move to Villa Park in June 2006 Petrov initially struggled to justify Martin O’Neill’s decision to bring him with him from Celtic, but he has since developed into a cornerstone of the side.

“I am delighted. It is only just a year ago that people were concerning themselves about whether Stiliyan had a future here,” said O’Neill.

“But he has battled back so much so that I’d like him to be around here for the next few years.

“If every person shows the same determination and willingness and drive that Stiliyan has shown the last year, there will be a future for anyone at the club.”
