Gareth Southgate’s Boro, who are now second from bottom in the Premier League, face another tough encounter at Man City this Saturday lunchtime.

UEFA president Michel Platini is investigating how the loan system works in light of David Beckham’s move to Milan.

The England midfielder has confirmed he would like to leave the Los Angeles Galaxy and stay in Italy when his three-month deal expires in March. However, Platini is concerned about the nature of the original move.

“My problem is not Beckham, it’s Milan buying a player for three months,” Platini said.

“Why then could they not buy a player for one game, for the final. You buy five players for the final. We have to look at it.”

Beckham joined Milan on loan to stay fit during the MLS offseason in a bid to prolong his England career and play in the 2010 World Cup.
