The first suspected case of a professional player in England failing a drugs test, is being investigated by the English FA.

The FA said it was looking into the case that tested positive for nandrolone during random drug tests carried out between April and Septemberthis year.

FA spokesman Paul Newman refused to identify the player but it is believed that the player does not play for a Premmier League club.

UK Sport, which conducts the tests, said the player had provided a sample containing 19-norandrosterone, a metabolite of nandrolone.

Several Europeannfoootballers have been banned having tested positive for nandrolone, among them, Dutchmen Edgar Davids, Frank de Boer and Jaap Stam and Portugal’s Fernando Couto.
