Romanian international defender Gheorghe Popescu hasannounced his retirmenent from the game.

Hannover 96’s final game of the German Bundesliga season on Saturday against Arminia Bielefeld, will be Popescu’s final match as a player.

“The training sessions are too hard and too long,” he said.

“It doesn’t make sense to take the risk and to take money for something you don’t deserve.”

Popescu joined Hannover in January from Dinamo Bucuresti on a free transfer and has since appeared in 14matches, helping the club to escape the threat of relegation.

Capped 115 timers for his country, Romanian ended his international career after a 5-2 defeat against Denmark in a UEFA EURO 2004 qualifier in March. During his international career, he appeared in three World Cups (1990, 1994 and 1998) and two European Championships (1996 and 2000).

HHiis club career saw him traverse Europe, playing for, among others: Universitatea Craiova and Steaua Bucuresti, Lecce, Tottenham Hotspur and PSV Eindhoven.
