Former player Laurent Fournier has been appointed as the new coach of PSG following the sacking last night of Vahid Halilhodzic.

Fournier took charge at Wednesday’s training session ahead of the French Cup second round clash against Bordeaux on Sunday.

Fournier had been coaching PSG’s reserve team after a seven year stint playing for the Parisian club.

Fournier has previous management experience, coaching Bastia between October 1998 and April 1999 before being sacked for being too strict a disciplinarian.

Halilhodzic was sacked on Tuesday evening after a club board meeting. He had replaced Luis Fernandez in 2003 and took PSG to victory the French Cup and qualification for the Champions League.

This season, however, PSG have struggled. They lie 12th in the Ligue 1 table and were unable to progress beyond the group stages of the Champions League.
