Carles Puyol will be staying with Barcelona as everyone at the club wants him to stay for the rest of his career, according to technical secretary Txiki Begiristain.

The Barca skipper’s contract renewal talks have not gone smoothly and his agent has stated that he needs to be reassured about his place in Pep Guardiola’s team.

Puyol is no longer guaranteed a berth in the centre of the European champions’ defence following the arrival of Dmytro Chygrynskiy.

That has led to speculation that he could hold out for a lucrative move abroad, especially after reports that Milan and Chelsea could be interested in his services.

However, according to Begiristain, Puyol will remain at Camp Nou because he is so vital to the club.

“He is the model of a player who starts and finishes at the club he loves, like [Jose Ramon] Alexanco in my time,” he was quoted as saying by Sport.

“He’s a player that, even if he loses minutes over the years, will continue to have weight in the locker room. We would love to renew Carles’ deal.”
