Morocco’s sports minister Mohamed Ouzzine has been sacked by the country’s king after rain disrupted a quarter-final in December’s Club World Cup.

A heavy downpour in Rabat before the game between Australia’s Western Sydney Wanderers and Cruz Azul of Nexico resulted in complaints from the players that the waterlogged pitch at the Prince Moulay Abdellah stadium was dangerous and subsequent matches were moved to Marrakech.

An investigation put the blame on the ministry and the company that prepared the venue after there was found to be a failure in the pitch’s drainage systems.
