Real Madrid coach Bernd Schuster has confirmed he is interested in signing Ajax striker Klaas-Jan Huntelaar.

A number of leading European clubs are believed to be tracking the Dutch international and Schuster admits Real are interested in Huntelaar.

“Dutch football is well known for producing strikers of this kind. Huntelaar is the type of player every club would wish for, lively and effective at the same time,” Schuster told Sportweek.

“Looking ahead to next season he’d certainly fit into my plans.

“As far as I’m concerned, Huntelaar’s level is up there with Johan Cruyff, Marco van Basten and Ruud van Nistelrooy.”

Meanwhile, Real winger Arjen Robben has dismissed talk of a crisis at El Santiago Bernabeu after their 3-2 defeat to Valencia on Sunday.

The defeat was Real’s second in succession allowing Barcelona to close the gap on them to four points.

“The defeat was a disappointment but we played really well and I don’t think there is a crisis,” said Robben.

“What we have to do is remain strong and be conscious of what awaits us.”
