Real Sociedad have sacked coach Jose Maria Amorrortu, the Primera Liga club has confirmed.

“Real Sociedad have decided to cancel the contract of first-team coach Jose Mari Amorrortu,” read a statement on the club’s official website.

“Real Sociedad would like to publicly express their gratitude and acknowledge the work carried out by Amorrortu.”

Real Sociedad lost 3-1 to Basque rivals Alaves on Sunday, a defeat which saw them drop to 15th in the table with 22 points from 21 games.

Amorrortu took charge at the Anoeta in the summer of 2004, joining from Eibar on a two-year deal. He replaced French coach Raynald Denoueix in June 2004 and led Real to a 14th placed finish last season.
