Real Sociedad saw their lead at the top of Spain’s Primera Division reduced to just one when they were held 0-0 by Real Madrid in the Bernabeu.

The visitors looked the better side for long periods, but their efforst were thwared by an impressive performance by Iker Casillas in the Madrid goal.

The result leaves Vicente del Bosque’s side five points adrift of the leadersin fifth spot.

In-form Mallorca moved up to second place with their seventh consecutive league win, which extends the club record. After fallling behind to a Racing Santander spot-kick, Ariel Ibagaza equalised for the visitors before the break and then the Walter Pandiani converted a penalty kick of his own ten minutes into the second-half to secure the win.

Champions Valencia dropped to third after a shock 1-0 defeat at struggling Osasuna. Striker Ivan Rosado scored the only goal for the home side on seven minutes to secure only their second league win of the season.

Elsewhere, Real Betis beat Celta Vigo 2-1 courtesy of a Joaquin goal two minutes from time. Jose Ignacio had given visitors Celta the lead midway through the second half, but Alfonso equalised before Joaquin secured the points that move Betis up to fourth.

On Saturday, Deportvo La Coruna’s 2-0 win over Barcelona, kept them in touch with the leaders and heaped further pressure on beleaguered Nou Camp coach Louis Van Gaal. Barce currently lie 10th, seven points behind pacesetters Real Sociedad.
