Jose Antonio Reyes hope of a return to Spain before Thursday’s transfer deadline, has moved a step closer with the news that Atletico Madrid are prepared to launch a bid for the Arsenal forward.

Reyes’s future at Arsenal has looked in doubt all summer with the winger revealing that he was deseprate to return to his homeland.

Arsenal are keen to recoup the €20 million they paid Sevilla for Reyes in January 2004, and it would appear that Atletico are prepared to match their valuation.

“I want to leave Arsenal but not just to play anywhere – I do not want to lose my prestige,” Reyes told the Guardian.

“I am excited about the prospect of going to Atletico. They are building an exciting team.

Atletico striker partner Fernando Torres is hopeful that the move can be sealed before Thursday’s deadline.

“I really hope he comes,” said Torres. “It would be a big step forward for us in terms of quality.

“I have spoken to him and he is very keen to come but right now it’s in the hands of the clubs.”
