Wayne Rooney will be out for up to three weeks with an ankle injury, Manchester United manager Sir Alex Ferguson has confirmed.

The England international limped out of United’s 2-2 draw with Bolton and had an ice-pack strapped to his ankle on the bench.

He had already been ruled out of the Red Devils’ UEFA Champions League clash with Valencia on Wednesday night and now Ferguson has revealed he faces an extended spell on the sidelines.

The United boss said: “It will be two to three weeks. But it depends because Wayne has done quite well with his recovery from injury in the past.”

The striker will miss the games with Sunderland and West Bromin the Premier League, as well as England’s home date with Montenegro on 12th October.
