Wayne Rooney has denied reports that he argued with Manchester United boss Sir Alex Ferguson.

The Sun reported that Rooney, Cristiano Ronaldo and Rio Ferdinand refused to get on the team bus after the game in Clyde on Saturday and took a car instead.

But a spokesman for Rooney said: “Wayne did obtain the permission of Manchester United’s manager to return separately.

“Any other suggestion is wrong and damaging to the player’s reputation.”

The Sun claimed the players were annoyed at having to make the 440-mile round trip by coach rather than plane.
