Matthias Sammer has resigned as Stuttgart coach afetr a disappointing end to the season cost the Bundesliga club a place in next season’s Champions League.

Stuttgart won just one of their last six games to finish fifth.

“This was not an easy decision,” said Stuttgart president Erwin Staudt.

“But along with Matthias, we came to the conclusion that it was the correct one. We thank Matthias for his work here.”

Sammer, who previously coached Borussia Dortmund, signed a three-year contract to take over at Stuttgart in May 2004 after the club Felix Magath moved to Bayern Munich.
