Schalke have sacked coach Frank Neubarth and installed Marc Wilmots as his replacement until the end of the season.

“We parted company with our coach and I cannot tell you more about this now,” said Schalke sports director Andreas Muller.

Neubarth took over at the beginning of this season, but he has paid the price for a disappointing campaign in the Bundesliga, which sees Schalke currently lying seven points adrift of the qualification places for the UEFA Champions League.

“Obviously we are very disappointed – my assistant Norbert Elgert and me would have liked to continue our work here,” said the departing Neubarth.

The club have appointed former Belgian international Marc Wilmots as actiung coach until the end of the season.

Neubarth is the sixth Bundesliga coach to part company with their club this season.
