Sevilla midfielder Antonio Puerta is reported to be a “very critical” condition after collapsing during a match on Saturday, doctors said on Tuesday.
“The player remains in the hospital in a very critical state,” doctors at the Virgen del Rocio hospital in Seville said in a statement.
“His clinical progress is unfavourable because of the consequences of the lack of oxygen to the brain, and for the effects on his organs caused by the prolonged cardiac arrest.”
The 22-year-old Spanish international collapsed after jogging back towards his own goal during the first half of the match against Getafe. He was prevented from swallowing his tongue but collapsed again in the changing rooms and had to be given cardiac resuscitation before being taken to hospital.
