Alan Shearer will not be returning to Newcastle United as Kevin Keegan’s assistant manager, but he has not ruled out a return to to the club in some capacity.

The former Magpies striker, who holds the club’s all-time goalscoring record, had admitted he would be interested in joining Keegan’s staff.

But after talks between the duo, Keegan confirmed that Shearer would not be employed as his assistant.

However, Keegan confirmed that he would meet with Shearer again after the weekend to hold further discussions on finding him a position at the club.

Keegan said: “We will see what happens on Monday. It will not be as number two, I will tell you that.

“It will not be, and that’s the conclusion we both came to. But it will be, if he decides to come in, a very worthwhile role.”
