There is renewed speculation in the Italian media that Andriy Shevchenko could return to Milan on a one-year loan from Chelsea.

Today’s Gazzetta dello Sport reports that Shevchenko could even be in Milan by the end of the week. It follows a meeting in Sardinia last week between Milan president Silvio Berlusconi and Chelsea owner Roman Abramovich.

The pair met at Berlusconi’s holiday villa, ostensibly to discuss Milan’s signing of Chelsea defender Branislav Ivanovic. But it now appears that they also talked about Shevchenko’s possible return to Italy.

Shevchenko has struggled for form and fitness since a £30million move to London two summers ago. With Ivorian striker Didier Drogba set to stay at Chelsea, despite speculation that he might join former coach Jose Mourinho at Internazionale, Shevchenko has slipped further down the pecking order at Stamford Bridge.

Shevchenko, now 31, scored 127 league goals in seven seasons in Milan. The Ukrainian has scored only nine times in two seasons at Chelsea and did not even make the substitutes bench for last season’s Champions League Final against Manchester United in Moscow.
