Chelsea striker Andrii Shevchenko is to undergo surgery on a groin injury at the end of the season.

Shevchenko sat out Tuesday’s Champions League semi-final defeat to Liverpool because of the problem.

However, Chelsea remain optimistic that the striker will play again before the end of the season.

A statement on the club website confirmed: “We are hopeful he will be available between now and the end of the season.”

Ahead of the European showdown with Liverpool, Chelsea were forced to deny reports that Shevchenko had refused to travel to Anfield.

A Chelsea statement read: “He suffered an injury in training on Sunday and it was decided afterwards that he was not fit to play against Liverpool.”
