Newcastle manager Graeme Souness is confident of signing Real Madrid and England striker Michael Owen.

Newcastle have spoken to Real about the possibility of signing the England striker following the departures from St James Park of Craig Bellamy and Patrick Kluivert.

Souness said: “I think there is a good chance of signing Owen.

“We know all about Michael’s situation – he is a target. But we also have other targets.”

With the new Premiership season about to kick-off, Alan Shearer is Souness’ only fit and available striker.

With the transfer window closing at the end of this month, Souness has less than three weeks to strengthen his squad.

Owen has also been linked with a move to Manchester United, although the Old Trafford club deny they are interested. His former club Liverpool are also reported to be considering making a bid.
