Spurs ended their Arsenal hoo-doo in midweek but they will need another big effort to beat Man Utd at Old Trafford, having last won there in 1989.

Tottenham have reportedly agreed a £7m deal with Middlesbrough for Jonathan Woodgate.

The Premiership club are also hoping complete the signings of Tiago, Alan Hutton and Gilberto da Silva Mela before the transfer window closes.

On Thursday Middlesbrough manager Gareth Southgate said the club did not have to sell players unless it chose to.

“We wouldn’t let anybody go unless we thought we were suitably covered in that position or had somebody else coming in who we thought could replace the player that was going,” he said.

Spurs will now intensify their efforts to sign Juventus midfielder Tiago for £9m – a deal they expect to go through when Mohamed Sissoko moves from Liverpool to Juve later today.

Spurs are also confident that they are close to agreeing a pre-contract deal with Hutton despite the Rangers full-back rejecting a move to White Hart Lane earlier in the month. Meanwhile, Hertha Berlin left-back Gilberto will move to London in a £2.5m deal after he fell out with his club over his demands for a new contract.
