Liverpool manager Rafael Benitez claims Premier League rivals Tottenham Hotspur are “desperate” to sell England striker Jermaine Defoe.

Newspaper reports have linked Liverpool’s French forward Djibril Cisse with a move to Spurs, possibly in exchange for Defoe who has spent much of this season on the bench.

When asked about the rumours linking Cisse with a transfer to Tottenham, Benitez told reporters on Friday: “They are desperate to sell Defoe. They are trying to sell the player.

“They try to use Cisse in the middle. I don’t know why, it is not our problem. They always talk about him (Cisse) and Defoe.

“I have said before they are desperate to sell Defoe and try to do something.”

Benitez added he was not looking to change his strikeforce at the moment after seeing his team score 15 goals in three games.

“I am happy with my strikers,” he said.
