Sven Goran Eriksson is set to call up Chelsea star John Terry into his forthcoming squad to face Liechtenstein and Turkey in the Euro 2004 qualifiers later this month.

The 22-year-old centre-back who was cleared of attacking a nightclub bouncer with a bottle last year, has been in excellent form this term and has even found himself being handed the captain’s armband at Chelsea.

England coach Sven Goran Eriksson has told the London Evening Standard that Terry has been very impressive and may be in line for a call up.

“John is playing very well and it is a very great boost for him to be made captain as well at Chelsea,” said Eriksson.

“When Gallas and Desailly were together earlier John played very little because their partnership was difficult to move. But he has taken his chance now and I’m very happy to have seen him do so well.”

With Sol Campbell likely to be missing for England, Eriksson could use Terry in at least one of the games.
