Former German international winger Andreas Thom has been named caretaker coach of Hertha Berlin following the sacking of Huub Stevens.

The 39-year-old, who finished his playing career with Hertha, has been in charge of the club’s amateur team since retiring from the game.

Hertha officially confirmed Stevens’ departure at a press-conference on Thursday, just hours after being hrashed 6-1 in the DFB Cup at Werder Bremen.

“Huub Stevens and the club have mutually decided to call it a day,” said Hertha’s general manager Dieter Hoeness.

“After the cup disaster there was simply no other viable solution for either Hertha or Huub Stevens.”
