Lilian Thuram says he is content with life in Barcelona, even though he has spent much of the season on the bench.

The French defender left Juventus for Spain in the summer, but has struggled to command a starting place at Camp Nou.

He came on for the last half hour of the 2-0 victory over Werder Bremen on Tuesday night to help the Barcelona reach the knockout phase of the Champions League.

“It was a surprise to be on the pitch, because I didn’t believe I would play from the substitutes bench,” he told Canal plus.

“I had a few difficulties coming into the game. Usually when you are on the bench you feel a bit like a spectator.

“Anyway I am fine at Barcelona. It is the best club in Europe at the moment so there are worse situations.

“I just hope to play more but it is up to me to work to achieve it.”
