Japanese World Cup player Kazuyuki Toda is to Premiership club Tottenham on a one-year contract, his J-League club Shimizu S-Pulse have confirmed.
The 25-year-old midfielder, whose distictive red mohican attracted attention at the World Cup finals, had been on a two-week trial with Sunderland, but Toda has rejected a chance to join the Premiership strugglers in favour of a switch to White Hart Lane.
A former full-back, Toda, noted for his tigerish tackling, played in all four of Japan’s World Cup matches.
