Former Real Madrid coach John Toshack has been appointed manager of struggling Primera Liga side Murcia in place of Joaquin Peiro.

“The club can confirm that the final details have been sorted out and that John Toshack will be the new coach until the end of the season,” a spokesman for the club said on Tuesday.

The well-travelled Welshman has spent much of his coaching career in Spain, working with Real Madrid, Real Sociedad and Deportivo Coruna. He has also coached in Wales, Turkey, France and Portugal, with Besiktas, St Etienne and Sporting Lisbon among his former clubs.

Murcia have struggled in the Primera Liga this season. They lie bottom of the table with just one victory in 20 games.
