Republic of Ireland striker Robbie Keane is poised to join Tottenham after the London club agreed the fee with Leeds United.

The clubs have agreed a £7 million deal for the 22-year0old.

Keane has become increasingly frustrated with his status at Elland Road, where has been used largely as a substitute since joing Leeds for £12 million in December 2000.

The arrival of Terry Venables combined with an impressive World Cup performance, convinced the Irishman that he would be an automatic firsat schoice this season. However, despite a goal in the opening match of the season, Keane has begun the the new campaign whenere he ended the old one – on the bench.

A disappointed Venables said: ‘Robbie is talking to Spurs regarding a deal for œ7million and it looks likely he is going to go through. He did ask to go. He stated that last week, even though I thought he was settled. Obviouslyhe was not.

‘We are now going to have to go with all the players we’ve got – we still have three strikers in the squad, while Robbie Fowler is only four weeks away from returning from his (hip) injury.’
