Francesco Totti is on course to be fit enough to represent Italy in the World Cup finals.

The Roma captain’s place in Germany had been thrown into doubt after he suffered a serious ankle injury but his recovery is ahead of schedule.

“From April 20, Totti will start working with athletics coaches,” said his doctor, Pierpaolo Mariani.

“His recovery is not quantifiable yet but, anyway, we are absolutely ahead of the times we were expecting.”

Mariani performed the operation on Totti after the 29-year-old suffered the injury during Roma’s Serie A game against Empoli.
