Giovanni Trapattoni believes that God was on Italy’s side after watching his team snatch the point they required against Mexico, to reach the last 16 of the World Cup.

“There truly is a God,” said Trapattoni. “We created five or six chances and deserved the result.”

Italy were grateful to Alessandro del Piero who came off the bench to level with five minutes remaining and Italy facing possible elimination.

“I spoke to Del Piero on the eve of the game and he has repaid me with this vital goal,” added Trapattoni.

The Italy coach was nonetheless angry at another disallowed goal, this time for Filippo Inzaghi, who thought he had given his side the lead, but his effort was disallowed for offside

“I’ve always said that Italian officials are the best,” he said.

Del Piero, who came on for Francesco Totti with 15 minutes left, was understandably elated with his contribution.

“It’s what I dreamed of last night,” said the Juventus forward. ‘ This goal takes us on to the next round and, after how the match was going for us, it’s a miracle that we’re there. It’s great, I can hardly speak as my mind is so confused.
