UEFA is to investigate a missile-throwing incident involving Liverpool skipper Steven Gerrard and Marseille fans at Anfield on Wednesday night.
Gerrard was hit by an object – believed to be a cigarette lighter – as he prepared to take a corner in the first half of their 1-0 Champions League win.
Liverpool manager Rafael Benitez confirmed his captain was unhurt and praised him for not retaliating.
“He is a good professional. Steven did well not to react,” said Benitez.
A Liverpool spokesman added: “Uefa’s delegate is aware of what happened and it is now in his hands.”
Uefa’s spokesman at the game added: “The incident will be included in both the match delegate’s report and the referee’s report.”
