UEFA have confirmed that they are to investigate allegations that Liverpool El Hadji Diouf spat atCeltic fans in last night’s UEFA Cup quarter-final first-leg match.

European football’s governing body revealed that they are awaiting the referee’s report and that they will also study video evidence before deciding whether to take any action.

If found guilty, the Senegalese striker can expect a fine and a lengthy ban. In January, UEFA imposed a four-match ban on Celta de Vigo midfield player Peter Luccin for spitting at an opponent during the UEFA Cup match against Celtic on 12 December.

Any decision will be taken before the second leg which takes place at Anfield next Thursday.
