Barcelona’s former Arsenal defender Giovanni van Bronckhorst has urged his side to try and persuade Thierry Henry to join their UEFA Champions League final opponents.

Barca have long been linked with a move for Henry, who has yet to agree a contract extension at Highbury.

“There has been a lot of speculation about him coming and he is very popular,” said van Bronckhorst.

“He is a great player and I would love him to come here as you always want the best players in your team, but we will have to wait and see.”

Van Bronckhorst is looking forward to playing against his former side.

“It is going to be a great game and a special one for me as I still have some friends at Highbury, especially Freddie (Ljungberg), so it will be nice to meet up with them again,” added the Dutch international.

“It will also be good to have a match between two sides who like playing open football.

“This is the outcome of three years hard work and people who have believed in the scheme to bring in great players.

“If we win the final then this will be the culmination of this and also the start of a new cycle.”
