Monaco say that they are now unlikely to sign Andy van der Meyde, after negotiations with the player broke down over personal terms.

The French side agreed a fee with Internazionale for the Dutch winger, and Didier Deschamps held talks with the player.

Van der Meyde was looking for a three-year deal while Monaco wanted to tie him down for four years, and this is thought to have been one of the chief obstacles preventing the deal going through.

“We found an agreement with Internazionale,” said a Monaco statement. “But talks with the player deteriorated.

“It was complex and we could not settle the last details.”
