Former Barcelona coach Louis van Gaal is reported to haveheld talks with Fulham over the vacant manager’s job at the west London club.

Van Gaal, sacked by the Catalan club earlier this season, met with Fulham officials in Amsterdam yesterday, according to the Independent newspaper.

Fulham are looking for a replacement for Jean Tigana who was sacked earlier this month.

Van Gaal has enjoyed mixed fortunes since leading a youthful Ajax side to Champions League success in 1995. A move to Barcelona brought immediate success and successive Liga titles. However, Van Gaal’s aloof persona and hisreliance on former Ajax players alienated him from supporters, and when president Josep Nunez resigned in the summer of 2000, Van Gaal followed suit.

Before returning to Barcelona last summer, Van Gaal coached the Dutch national side, but he quit shortly after Holland failed to reach 2002 World Cup finals.

Other names in the frame to take over at Fulham include Nottingham Forest boss Paul Hart and George Burley, currently in temporary charge at Derby.
