Louis van Gaal has resigned as Ajax’s technical director.

Van Gaal’s departure comes after reports of tension between him andcoach Ronald Koeman.

The tension mounted when Ajax sold Swedish striker Zlatan Ibrahimovic to Juventus in August just before the end of the transfer window, and his intended successor, Roda JC Kerkrade’s Arouna Kone, failed a medical.

Ajax’s poor start to their Champions League campaign did not helped the situation. Successive defeats to Juventus and Bayern Munich increased the pressure on Koeman, who clashed with Van Gaal after the defeat in Munich.

Van Gaal won three Dutch titles, the Champions League, UEFA Cup and World Club Cup, in his first spell in charge at Ajax. He led Barcelona to Spanish titles in 1998 and 1999 but resigned the following season, before becoming Dutch national coach.
