Ruud van Nistelrooy opened his goalscoring account for Real Madrid with a hat-trick against nine-man Levante.

The prolific Dutch striker joined Real from Manchester United during the summer for £10.2m fee. Van Nistelrooy, who also missed a late penalty kick repaid a chunk of his sizeable fee as he helped his team to their first win of the season. Antonio Cassano also scored for Real.

Van Nistelrooy said: “It’s been a good day, a very important win. I missed a penalty, which is really bad.”

He struck first with a shot from the edge of the area on 16 minutes.

Cassano added a second for Real before Levante reduced the arrears through Felix Ettien.

Van Nistelrooy restored Real’s two-goal cushion after the break before missing from the penalty spot. However, in injury time the striker sealed his hat-trick to seal a ccomplete day for recently-appointed coach Fabio Capello.
