Atalanta president Ivan Ruggeri has issued a vote of confidence in his beleagured coach Giovanni Vavassori, insisting that his job is safe despite the fact that the club are second-from-bottom of Serie A with just one point from their first four games.

“There are no doubts surrounding the future of Vavassori,” confirmed Ruggeri. ‘We have had more difficult times in the past with this coach and there is no need to make any over the top decisions.

“The fundamental problem at the minute is thatwe have a lot of injury problems,” he added.

“Players who haven’t been able to train properly and on Sunday we were even without the suspended Cristiano Doni. It is only natural that a club of our size would suffer in these circumstances.”
