Terry Venables, who been linked with the Republic of Ireland’s managerial vacancy, has denied being approached about the job or applied for it.

Venables has beeen intstallled as favourite to succeed Brian Kerr who was sacked after Ireland’s failure to qualify for next year’s World Cup finals.

However, Venables played down the reports.

“I have not been approached for the Republic of Ireland job and I have not applied for it,” he told Sky Sports News.

The Football Association of Ireland merely added: “The process is ongoing”.

Venables, who has experience of managing at international level after spells in charge of England and Australia, has not worked assisting Bryan Robson at Middlesbrough.
