Latvia’s maintained their unbeaten start to the EURO 2004 qualifying campaign with a 1-0 win over San Marino.

The win takes Latvia to the top of Group 4, with seven points from their opening three games, three clear of Hungary in what promises to be one of the tightest qualifying groups.

San Marino, who had never gained apoint in European qualifying matches, looked on course to break their duck until defender Carlo Valentini put through his own net a minute from time.

Latvia coach Aleksandrs Starkovs admitted he was happy with his side’s progess.

“We are realistic about qualifying but optimistic as we already have more points than expected,” he said.

“We have to keep going and see how many points we can collect. This game showed that every match is hard.”
