Manchester United’s injury crisis has worsened with the news defender Nemanja Vidic will miss Tuesday’s Champions League tie at Wolfsburg.

The Serb is suffering from flu and has been left at home, with United already through to the last 16 of the tournament.

Vidic joins Rio Ferdinand, Wes Brown, Gary Neville, Rafael da Silva, Fabio da Silva, Johnny Evans and John O’Shea on the sidelines for United.

Michael Carrick will play at centre-back, possibly alongside Darren Fletcher.

Fletcher was expected to fill in at right-back but could now be forced to move to the centre following Vidic’s withdrawal from the squad, although Patrice Evra could be another option.

Among the unfamiliar names appearing in United’s 19-man squad are Oliver Gill, son of chief executive David, Magnus Eikrem, Cameron Stewart, Matt James and Oliver Norwood.

United have already booked their place in the Champions League knockout stages but still need a point to be sure of finishing top of the group,.

Midfielder Paul Scholes said: “We want to win the game and finish top of the group.
“How much difference that makes to who we get in the next round, I am not too sure. There are lots of good teams at that stage of the tournament.”
