Aston Villa have signed Bulgarian midfielder Stilian Petrov from Celtic in a deal worth £6.5m.
The 27-year-old captain of the Bulgarian national team has signed a four-year contract and the move sees the midfielder reunited with former Celtic boss Martin O’Neill.
“I’ve known him for quite some time and I think he is athletic, young and can also score some goals for us,” O’Neill told Villa’s official website.
“I think his best years are ahead of him, at 27. He’s the right age but he’s also got plenty of experience behind him.”
Petrov joined Celtic in July 1999 from CSKA Sofia and has made more than 250 appearances for the club. He was voted the Scottish Premier League’s player of the year in 2001 after helping Celtic to the domestic treble.
“He’s got that winning mentality from his years at Celtic but I think he had that anyway,” added O’Neill.
“I am delighted that we’ve been able to sign him.”
