Former Fulham defender Moritz Volz has been given an opportunity to earn a permanent deal with Schalke.

The German full-back, who has been without a club since leaving Craven Cottage in the summer, is available on a free transfer.

Volz actually began his career at Schalke before being joining Arsenal in 1999. He made 16 appearances for the Gunners before enjoying five years at Fulham.

Having not played a full game for around a year, Volz admits he is some way from being at his sharpest.

“I have not been played a full match for almost 12 months, that is why I am delighted to have received the chance to join Schalke for training,” he told Kicker.

“The coaching staff of Felix Magath (Schalke’s manager) are well known for getting players fit enough and this is my top priority.

“I have been injured quite often lately, but since Christmas time I am able to do full training and I am keen to know how I can handle training stress.

“I have never played in the Bundesliga, it would surely be a real challenge for me.”

Schalke boss Magath said: “There has been no decision taken whether he will be signed or not.”
