Werder Bremen coach Thomas Schaaf has been rewarded for taking the club to the knockout stages of the Champions League by being handed a two-year contract extension by the Bundesliga club.

“We are looking forward to more successful years with Thomas Schaaf. He has proven his worth through his honest and fantastic work over recent years,” said Bremen chairman Jurgen Born.

Schaaf was appointed coach in May 1999 with his finest moment coming in 2004 season when he won the league and cup double.

“I’m sure I have made exactly the right decision even though it’s a somewhat unusual one in this day and age,” Schaaf said.

“I have the freedom to work just as I would like here,” he added.
