Germany and recent World Cup winners Italy are well fancied for Euro 2008.

Birmingham have confirmed that Wigan have asked for permission to speak to Steve Bruce about their managerial vacancy.

The Latics sacked boss Chris Hutchings last week following a run of six consecutive Premier League defeats.

Bruce, who briefly managed at the JJB Stadium in 2001 prior to the appointment of Paul Jewell, has yet to sign a new deal with his current club.

The former Manchester United defender verbally agreed a new contract with the Birmingham board at the end of last season, but he has yet to put pen to paper with prospective new owner Carson Yeung deferring the deal.

Jewell turned down what he described as an ‘unbelievable’ offer from Wigan chairman Dave Whelan to make a shock return to the club he quit at the end of last season.
