Wigan Athletic have finally confirmed Steve Bruce as their new manager after he secured his release from Birmingham City.

The club said in a statement that Bruce had signed a contract and would formally start work at the JJB Stadium on Monday.

Wigan had hoped to announce Bruce’s arrival at a news conference earlier in the week but were forced to delay his appointment due to an unresolved issue between the manager and Birmingham.

Bruce replaces Chris Hutchings, who was sacked this month after 13 games in charge. Hutchings’s predecessor Paul Jewell turned down a return to the job he left at the end of last season.
