Tottenham defender Jonathan Woodgate has undergone surgery in an attempt to cure a recurring groin injury.
Woodgate has been unable to play in any of the club’s pre-season preparations and spent part of the summer in the United States visiting a specialist.
Spurs are yet to confirm how long they expect the player to be sidelined but say he will now begin a rehabilitation programme with club physios.
With Matthew Dawson also injured Spurs are struggling with defenders, despite signing Sebastien Bassong from Newcastle last week.
Tottenham face Liverpool in their Premier League opener on Sunday.
